Installing Elementary OS Freya on a High-Resolution Screen Won't Display Correctly
When I tried to install Elementary OS on my high-res laptop with a 3840 x 2160 display, the installer displayed only about 25% of the screen. I could see the upper-left corner of the pretty background page and just the upper-left corner of the first prompt.
It seems the installer was sizing the screen right (big), but only displaying a small portion of the actual display. This meant I couldn't continue with installation because I couldn't answer the questions.
There is a workaround, however...
How to see it fail...
- Insert your installer media (USB or whatever).
- Boot to it (F12 on my laptop and pick USB)
- See the screen only show the very upper-left of the screen and part of the installer dialog screen.
- Force your system down again.
How to get it so you can install...
- Insert your installer media (USB or whatever).
- Boot up, but hit F12 (on my laptop) and pick the UEFI USB option. You'll boot to a super tiny unreadable GRUB screen.
- Press enter. This will tell the system to boot to the "Live CD" version of Elementary OS. This works from USB or from CD media.
- The full screen of the live cd will be displayed. Pretty!
- Look down on the dock/tray. There will be a picture of a CD and that is the installer. Double-click that.
- You can now answer the prompts and finish the install.
- You're welcome.

Had to hold to get to the GRUB menu, but other than that, worked like a charm. Thank you :)
